Petitdidierprioux Architectes in partnership with Highlight has won two lots of The Face of Renovation competition under the framework of the upgrading program of the housing stock in Moscow.
Of the 31 sites launched simultaneously during the competition, these two alone represent nearly 600 ha, with approximately 3 million m² to build, or the equivalent of 60,000 units of housing.
The Face of Renovation
The Face of Renovation is an international architecture competition aiming to provide urban and morphological solutions and to redefine an aesthetic of the built environment and public spaces under the framework of the program to upgrade Moscow’s housing stock. Given its breadth, it can be considered as one of the largest competitions of recent decades, because it covers almost all the districts of the city of Moscow.
As part of the extension of the renovation of housing stock program initiated 4 years ago by the municipality of Moscow, the decision was taken to launch an international competition aiming to create quality urban environments while also improving the quality of life in the peripheral districts of the capital.
Taking on such a vast program and providing a relevant answer
Petitdidierprioux Architectes and Highlight envisage the map of Moscow as a mosaic comprised of a historic hub surrounded by diverse urban fabrics: residential districts, green spaces, former industrial zones, etc. Thus, the team of architects proposes to include these different sections of the city in a coherent urban master plan and to make them as attractive as the city center. By following this principle, districts sharing a number of common points in terms of missed functional uses but generating a distinct identity were proposed. Each possesses its own subtly varied range of ambiances and atmospheres, a source of surprise and harmony. The approach consisted of implementing a structured, generous and open architecture, highlighting public spaces while encouraging their appropriation by Muscovites.
Urban typologies
The team designed a range of architectural combinations allowing for a specific answer in each urban situation (proximity to infrastructure, a green space, a heritage element, etc.). Thus, a coherent urban language was created, composed of ten types, which, combined with each other or differentiated by material qualities or a specific color, offer infinite urban variations.
Definition of a system
Thus, each typology is defined by three basic characteristics: its type of perforation of façades (horizontality, verticality or piercing), its choice of material (brick, plaster or metal) and its color range, guided by the context of the district.
From these three main elements emerge combinations or variations making it possible to either express the monumentality of the most structuring buildings, or to search for a fragmented approach aiming to recreate an urban fabric at the human scale, and to do so according to the urban context.
Finally, specific and careful attention is paid to the relation to the ground in order to anchor the buildings in their environment and to make it possible to create clear and enhancing pathways and sequences. Sidewalks, forecourts and garden squares accompany the built environment and double-height lobbies form a shared base and the design of ground floors encourages the appropriation of the different spaces.
