Wettbewerbsaufgabe

Competition assignment
The object of the present call for ideas is to identify the best ideational proposal for the renovation and enhancement of the Municipal Theatre of Bologna and the urban context in which it is situated. The Municipal Theatre is located in an area of the historical city centre normally defined as ‘Zone U’ in reference to the presence of buildings that host offices and establishments pertaining to the University of Bologna. The goals of the renovation and enhancement project are to redefine the Theatre’s relationship to this urban area and enhance the potential of its role as an ‘urban device’ capable of opening out to its surroundings, thereby activating and maintaining new relationships with the physical and social context over time.

The project should entail:
— a reconfiguration of the physical and functional relationships between the Theatre and its urban surroundings, starting with a rethinking of the public spaces within and outside the building,
— fulfilment of some of the Theatre’s needs and its specific activities.
The ideational solution, while as a whole, should be organized into two phases which follow each other but are independent in terms of realization. Current available financing will enable realization of the first phase (first functional allotment) and the Administration’s intent is to make further financing of the same amount available for the second phase.
The general and particular characteristics, as well as the regulations and needs to satisfy in the project for renewal are contained in the preliminary design document and other attached documents available for participants.
In accordance with Arts. 63, clause 4 and 156, clause 6 of the Code and via a procedure negotiated without prior publication of an announcement, the call announcer reserves the right to entrust the winner of the competition with drafting the technical and economic feasibility project as well as the final designs, working plan, and safety coordination. This pertains to the design phase of the interventions in the first functional allotment, with the objective of renewing the systems, the consequent demolition of volumes that will no longer be used, and the reconfiguration of the façade along Via del Guasto.
