Due to its curved walls and roof, the new building gives a tent-like impression. The façades of the building consist of cast panels made from recycled glass. The museum has been designed with a large staircase in the central lobby and exhibition spaces around it following the curved forms of the facades. In addition to a translucent glass roof, two terraces have been placed on the roof—one facing the Market Square and the other facing the sea.

The new museum building has been designed to be compact and low in height, preserving views from Tähtitorninvuori Park towards the Market Square and Katajanokka. The proposal’s slanted, stepped walls, and the triangular forms of the facade continue into the interior and the main stairs. The exhibition floor overlooks the sea from a large terrace, which continues as a wrap-around outdoor gallery and balcony.

The rectangular building is low in its height and the large glass facades connect the interior of the museum to the building's surroundings. The building materials are glass, granite and different wood materials such as birch and pine. There is a large terrace on the roof.

Tyrsky

The building, with its curved roof and zinc-sheet cladding consists of rectangular volumes. In the middle of the building, there is a small inner courtyard, which also allows daylight into the centre of the building. The undulating roof draws inspiration from the sea and its rhythms. The proposal uses solid timber for both load-bearing structures and interior surfaces.

In 2022 the City of Helsinki and the State of Finland established the Real Estate Company ADM to be responsible for organising the design competition and developing and delivering the new museum building. The company is partnering with the Foundation for the Finnish Museum of Architecture and Design to launch a competition that seeks an exceptional design solution for the New Museum of Architecture and Design in Helsinki. The competition is arranged in collaboration with the City of Helsinki and the Finnish Association of Architects (SAFA). The home of Finnish design and architecture should be a globally recognised institution.The new AD Museum will celebrate the past and future of Nordic design and architecture with a global ambition, in so doing repositioning both Helsinki as an architecture and design-driven city and Finland as a global pioneer of design and architecture. The new museum will be a forum for dialogue about how architecture and design can contribute to the complex challenges facing society today. A total of € 300,000-400,000 in prizes will be awarded to selected competition entrants. Each team that reaches Stage 2 of the competition will be awarded € 50,000 each. An instalment of € 30,000 will be paid at the beginning of Stage 2. The remaining € 20,000 will be paid upon receipt of a final proposal submitted by a design team and developed in accordance with the requirements of the competition. In addition to the awards of the Stage 2, the jury will distribute 3 prize positions at the end of the competition. The awards are: 1st prize 50,000€, 2nd prize 35,000€ and 3rd prize 25,000 € and 2 purchases, 20,000€ each. The jury may also award honorary mentions. The jury may, by unanimous decision, change the distribution of the prize sum in accordance with the competition rules of the Finnish Association of Architects (SAFA). Real Estate Company ADM reserves the right to negotiate and conclude a service procurement agreement with the competition winner in accordance with the Finnish Act on Public Procurement and Concession Contracts (1397/2016) point 8 of subsection 2 of section 40. Should no agreement be reached with the competition winner, Real Estate Company ADM reserves the right to negotiate and conclude a service procurement agreement with the next best participant, and so on until a service procurement agreement is concluded with a participant. The competition is a Design contest in accordance with the Finnish Act on Public Procurement and Concession Contracts (1397/2016) section 54 and 55. In Stage 1 of the competition (Apr 15– Aug 29, 2024), the design teams will submit an architectural concept, explain its relationship with the surrounding cityscape, and create an initial building design that meets the functional requirements and financial criteria laid out in the competition brief. All competition entries submitted successfully for Stage 1 of the competition will be published with a pseudonym on the website. To Stage 2 of the competition (Feb-May 2025), the jury will select 3 to 5 entries that both meet the evaluation criteria and exhibit the greatest development potential. Design teams selected for Stage 2 will further develop their proposals based on feedback delivered as part of the jury’s evaluation process at the end of Stage 1. During Stage 2, the overall design direction will be further developed to align with the requirements of future museum users. This includes ensuring that the design meets the required level of architectural quality and adheres to the principles of social and environmental responsibility and project feasibility.
