Am 14. Juli 2021 gab die Smithsonian Institution bekannt, dass sie von Jeff Bezos die größte philanthropische Spende seit ihrer Gründung erhalten wird. Ein Teil des Geschenks unterstützt den Bau von Ausstellungen im Gebäude des Nationalen Luft- und Raumfahrtmuseums (NASM) an der National Mall, und der Großteil des Geschenks ist für den Bau und den Betrieb eines Weltklasse-Bildungszentrums mit Sitz im NASM bestimmt. Das neue Bezos Learning Center (BLC) wird eine institutionsübergreifende Einrichtung sein, die vom NASM-Direktor und dem stellvertretenden Direktor für Bildung und Besuchererfahrung des NASM geleitet wird. Ein Hauptaugenmerk der BLC-Programme liegt auf dem Erreichen von traditionell unterversorgten Gemeinden in Washington, DC und im ganzen Land, sowohl am Standort der neuen Einrichtung als auch virtuell, da das BLC die neuesten technologischen Ressourcen und Entwicklungen für das Engagement der Studenten nutzen wird.

Das Lernen an der NASM weckt die Neugierde und befähigt die Lernenden, sich die Möglichkeiten unserer Zukunft vorzustellen.

Das BLC ist ein wichtiges Bindeglied zwischen den Lernenden und den unvergleichlichen Sammlungen der NASM. Das BLC wird der Knotenpunkt sein, an dem authentische Kreativität, Problemlösung, Tüftelei und Innovation stattfinden und die nächste Bessie Coleman, John Glenn oder Jeff Bezos der Welt hervorbringen. Die physische Struktur des Gebäudes bietet uns eine unglaubliche Gelegenheit, diese Zusammenhänge zu veranschaulichen, indem wir Artefakte und Kunstwerke sowie Schaufenster im Stil einer Schatzkiste einbeziehen, in denen die Arbeiten der Studenten ausgestellt werden.

Um das Engagement der NASM für authentisches Lernen am BLC zu demonstrieren, startet sie einen Wettbewerb für Architektur- und Designstudenten und Fachleute mit höchstens 5 Jahren Berufserfahrung.

Die Teilnehmer sollen ein architektonisches Element für die Außenstruktur entwerfen, das Konzepte aus den Bereichen Luftfahrt, Astronomie und/oder Raumfahrt auf eindrucksvolle Weise visualisiert und kommuniziert, mit der Absicht, dass die Aspekte und Attribute ihres Entwurfs in die Gesamtgestaltung und den Bau des BLC einfließen können. Den Gewinnern des Wettbewerbs wird eine bezahlte Stelle am NASM angeboten, die zunächst auf ein Jahr befristet ist, und sie werden als Mitglieder des Bauprojektteams fungieren.

Das Smithsonian, insbesondere das NASM, dankt den Designern und Architekten, die sich dieser Herausforderung stellen werden.

Competition assignment
On July 14, 2021, the Smithsonian Institution announced that it would be receiving the largest philanthropic gift since its founding from Mr. Jeff Bezos. A portion of the gift supports exhibit construction within the National Air and Space Museum (NASM) building on the National Mall, and the bulk of the gift provides for the construction and operations of a “world class center for education based at NASM.” The new Bezos Learning Center (BLC) will be a pan-institutional resource that will be overseen by the NASM Director and NASM’s Associate Director for Education and Visitor Experience. A primary focus of the BLC’s programs is reaching traditionally underserved communities in Washington, DC and across the nation, both at the site of the new facility and virtually, as the BLC will employ the latest technological resources and developments available for student engagement.

Learning at NASM sparks curiosity and empowers learners to imagine the possibilities of our future.

The BLC is a critical link between learners and NASM’s unparalleled collections. The BLC will be the nexus whereby authentic creativity, problem solving, tinkering and innovation takes place, fostering the world’s next Bessie Coleman, John Glenn, or Jeff Bezos. The physical structure of the building gives us an incredible opportunity to illustrate these connections by incorporating artifacts and art as well as ‘treasure box’ style window cases that will display student work.

As a demonstration of NASM’s commitment to engaging in authentic learning at the BLC, it is launching a design challenge for architecture and design students and professionals with 5 years or less of professional experience.

Participants will design an architectural element for the exterior structure that visualize and communicate aviation, astronomy, and/or aerospace concepts in an impactful way, with the intention that the aspects and attributes of their design may be incorporated into the overall design and construction of BLC. Winners of the design challenge will be offered a paid position at NASM with an initial term of one year and will serve as members on the building project team.

Das National Air and Space Museum hat auch Designstudenten und Nachwuchsarchitekten eingeladen, gemeinsam mit Perkins&Will an dem Projekt zu arbeiten. Sie haben die Möglichkeit, ein architektonisches Element für die Außenfassade des Gebäudes zu entwerfen, das die wissenschaftliche Luftfahrt, Astronomie und Raumfahrt repräsentiert. Teams aus zwei geeigneten Teilnehmern wurden zur Teilnahme an der ersten Phase des Wettbewerbs eingeladen, die am 18. April 2023 abgeschlossen wurde. Die in die engere Wahl gekommenen Teams werden an Phase 2, der letzten Phase des Wettbewerbs, teilnehmen. Der siegreiche Vorschlag wird später in diesem Jahr ausgewählt und die Designer werden eingeladen, dem Bauprojektteam des Bezos Learning Center beizutreten und erhalten eine bezahlte Stelle im National Air and Space Museum für bis zu drei Jahre.

The National Air and Space Museum also invited design students and early-career architects to join Perkins&Will on the project. They have the opportunity to create an architectural element for the building’s exterior to represent scientific aviation, astronomy, and aerospace. Teams of two eligible participants were invited to participate in the first phase of the challenge, which was completed on April 18th, 2023. The shortlisted teams will engage in phase 2, the final stage of the competition. The winning proposal will be selected later this year and the designers will be invited to join the Bezos Learning Center building project team and receive a paid position with the National Air and Space Museum for up to three years.
