In 2019, Norway will be the Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair. The project is Norway’s largest commitment to cultural-export, ever. As part of the Guest of Honour project, NORLA, in cooperation with The Norwegian Centre for Design and Architecture (DOGA), will launch an open architecture competition for the design of an indoor pavilion, which will be 2300 sqm.

The Guest of Honour project is a unique opportunity to showcase the best of Norwegian literature, and other art forms, internationally. The pavilion should be a window to Norwegian literature, it should be alive, playful, promote the joy of reading, and surprise a world audience, says Halldór Guðmundsson, NORLA’s project manager for Frankfurt 2019.

The guest country project is one of the largest ever projects in Norwegian cultural exports. The project is financed by the government c/o 3 ministries, as well as through funding from organisations in the Norwegian book industry, private institutions and industry. NORLA organises the project on behalf of Norway. NORLA, Norwegian literature abroad, is the export body for Norwegian literature. NORLA executes a one-step open planning and design competition for the concept and design of the pavilion Norway shall have as a guest land at the book fair in Frankfurt in 2019. The pavilion in this competition does not refer to a free-standing building, but a room with an interior consisting of one or more construction to be built under a roof. The pavilion shall be built in a hall at the fair in Frankfurt. The hall is 2,300 m2. Design and concept proposals are therefore about fulling this hall in the best possible manner. The planning and design competition occurs in collaboration with the institution Design and Architecture Norway, DOGA. The National Association of Norwegian Architects (NAL) is a technical competition official and jury secretary. The physical construction of the pavilion is not part of this announcement.
