Offener Ideenwettbewerb
Wettbewerbsaufgabe
Competition assignment
The competition invited participants to envision the expansion of a distinctive rural retreat set within the Argentine Pampas, with the aim of accommodating up to 20 guests while preserving the site’s intimate and authentic character. It called for the design of small-scale lodging units capable of integrating harmoniously with the surrounding landscape through sensitive material choices and sustainable design principles. More than a simple hospitality project, the challenge encouraged a meaningful dialogue between past and present, connecting new architectural interventions with the existing structures and the vast rural context. Participants were free to explore a wide range of spatial strategies, from repeatable units to flexible systems or clustered configurations, allowing architecture to respond organically to both use and place.

LA MADRESELVA Competition
Terraviva launches LA MADRESELVA, a new international competition inviting designers to envision a contemporary retreat in the heart of the Argentine Pampas: an architecture of silence, tradition and reconnection. Prizes up to 10.000 € will be awarded to the winners selected by an international jury panel composed, among others, by Marco Rampulla (Marco Rampulla Arquitecto), Ana Lina Klotzman (Navello Klotzman Arquitectas), T. R. Radhakrishnan (Interboro Partners) and Weiyu Xu (Kohn Pedersen Fox - KPF).
BRIEF
La Madreselva is a historic countryside property near San Antonio de Areco, known as the “Cradle of Argentine Tradition.” Immersed in the culture of the gauchos and nestled in the rural vastness of the Pampas, the site offers an authentic landscape for rural tourism.
The competition invites participants to design a series of small-scale lodging units and communal spaces, expanding the site's capacity to host up to 20 guests without compromising its rural soul.
Designers are encouraged to develop a project that merges architecture, landscape and cultural identity: an intervention that enhances the quiet presence of the original structures while providing new experiences for contemporary travellers seeking disconnection and immersive tradition.
PRIZES

GUIDELINES
The intervention area lies within the northern portion of the estate, currently undeveloped. Proposals may include a flexible mix of architectural volumes and shared-use spaces. The site’s defining features - such as the century-old trees, the existing quincho and the iconic Australian Tank (currently a rustic pool) - must be preserved and thoughtfully integrated. Designs should respond to the local climate and make use of sustainable, context-sensitive solutions. Intermediate spaces like pergolas, terraces and patios are encouraged to create smooth indoor-outdoor transitions and year-round usability.
REQUESTED MATERIAL
Two A1 panels (59,4 x 84,1 cm - horizontal) and a brief text describing the proposal (250-500 words).
