Im Zeitalter von Streaming-Diensten und sozialen Medien ist das Kino wichtiger denn je. Die einzigartige Erfahrung des Kinos hat eine jahrhundertealte Tradition. Das Kinoerlebnis bedeutet, völlig in eine Geschichte einzutauchen, gemeinsam mit anderen zu schauen und zu reagieren, ohne Ablenkung durch Telefone oder Gespräche. Das Kino und das Kinoerlebnis haben immer noch etwas Einzigartiges an sich, das nirgendwo sonst nachgeahmt werden kann.

Das isländische Kino boomt, und die isländische Filmindustrie bringt regelmäßig etwa vier einheimische Filme pro Jahr heraus. Sie kann auf eine Reihe von Erfolgen zurückblicken, darunter eine Oscar-Nominierung für den besten ausländischen Film im Jahr 1991 für „Children of Nature“ von Friðrik Þór Friðriksson und den wunderschön gestalteten Film „Rams“ von Autor und Regisseur Grímur Hákonarson, der 2015 in Cannes mit einem Preis ausgezeichnet wurde.

Neben den einheimischen Filmen hat sich Island schnell zu einem wichtigen Standort für internationale Produktionen entwickelt. Filmstudios und Produktionsfirmen wie 20th Century Fox und Lucasfilm Ltd. strömen in Scharen herbei, um die atemberaubenden und einzigartigen Landschaften Islands für alle Arten von Filmen zu nutzen, von Science-Fiction- und Fantasy-Filmen bis hin zu großen Hollywood-Produktionen. Eine der berühmtesten Fernsehserien, die in Island gedreht wurde, war natürlich Game of Thrones, und wichtige Drehorte der Serie sind zu beliebten Touristenzielen geworden.

Einer dieser Drehorte sind die Grjótagjá-Höhlen im Norden Islands, eine Sammlung von drei kleinen Höhlen in der Nähe des Mývatn-Sees. Die Höhlen beherbergen einige der schönsten geothermalen Pools der Welt und wurden in Game of Thrones in der Szene gezeigt, in der Jon Snow und Ygritte sich zum ersten Mal verlieben. Die Höhlen befinden sich in unmittelbarer Nähe zueinander, wobei zwei von ihnen nur 50 Meter voneinander entfernt sind, und liegen auf dem Ackerland von Vogar.

Der Iceland Movie Pavilion Wettbewerb wird in Zusammenarbeit mit der Landeigendur Voga ehf durchgeführt, die derzeitige Eigentümerin des Vogar-Ackerlandes. Für diesen Wettbewerb bittet Buildner die Teilnehmer, Entwürfe für einen Filmpavillon einzureichen, der an diesem wunderschönen Ort in Island errichtet werden könnte.

Der Pavillon sollte das Wesen des isländischen Kinos, seinen unverwechselbaren Charakter und seine einzigartige Geschichte widerspiegeln, wobei ein kleiner Kinosaal mit Platz für bis zu 50 Besucher im Mittelpunkt stehen sollte.

Der Pavillon sollte den Besuchern das isländische Kino näher bringen und den Fans einen Ort bieten, an dem sie sich treffen und ihre Leidenschaft für den Film teilen können. Dies könnte in Form einer kleinen Galerie oder eines Veranstaltungsraums mit einem Café oder einer Bar geschehen, in dem die Gäste bewirtet werden können. Die Teilnehmer werden aufgefordert, diese Anforderungen zu berücksichtigen, damit der Raum nicht nur funktional, sondern auch einladend und ansprechend ist. Die unverwechselbaren und bemerkenswerten Landschaften und Naturdenkmäler Islands sollten ein untrennbarer Bestandteil des endgültigen Konzepts sein.

In an age of streaming services and social media, cinema is more important than ever. The unique experience of cinema is a tradition that has lasted for hundreds of years. The cinema experience means becoming fully immersed in a story, watching and reacting with others, and without the distraction of phones or conversations. There’s still something unique about cinema and the theatrical experience that cannot be replicated anywhere else.

Icelandic cinema is booming with the Icelandic film industry regularly releasing around four domestic films per year. It has a history of success stories, including an Academy Award nomination for best foreign in 1991 for Friðrik Þór Friðriksson’s Children of Nature, and writer-director Grímur Hákonarson’s beautifully crafted Rams which took home an award at Cannes in 2015.

In addition to local films, Iceland has quickly become an important location for international production. Movie studios and production companies like 20th Century Fox and Lucasfilm Ltd are flocking to make use of the stunning and unique landscapes of Iceland in all sorts of films from science-fiction and fantasy films to big-budget Hollywood productions. One of the most famous TV shows to film in Iceland was of course Game of Thrones, and key locations used in the series have become popular tourist spots.

One such location is the Grjótagjá caves in northern Iceland; a collection of three small caves located near Lake Mývatn. The caves are home to some of the most beautiful geothermal pools in the world and were featured in Game of Thrones in the scene where Jon Snow and Ygritte first fell in love. The caves are in close proximity to each other, with two of them just 50 meters apart, and are located on Vogar farmland.

The Iceland Movie Pavilion competition is running in collaboration with the Landeigendur Voga ehf who are the current landowners of Vogar farmland. For this competition, Buildner is asking participants to submit designs for a movie pavilion that could be constructed in this beautiful location in Iceland.

The pavilion should reflect the essence of Icelandic cinema, its distinctive character, and unique history, with the central focus being a small movie theater capable of hosting up to 50 visitors.

The pavilion would need to be a place to introduce visitors to Icelandic cinema as well as offer fans a place to gather and share their passion for film. This could take the form of a small gallery or event space with a cafe or bar that could cater to guests. Participants are encouraged to consider these requirements to make the space engaging and inviting as well as functional. Iceland’s distinctive and remarkable landscapes and natural landmarks should be an inseparable part of the final concept.
