Bee Breeders hat sich mit ARCHHIVE BOOKS zusammengetan, um einen Wettbewerb für tragbare Lesesäle zu organisieren, die in Städten auf der ganzen Welt leicht auf- und abgebaut werden können. Ziel des Projekts ist es, eine modulare Struktur zur gemeinsamen Nutzung von Büchern aufzubauen, das Lesen zu fördern und Gemeinschaftsräume mit freiem Zugang zu gedruckter Literatur zu schaffen - zugängliche Bibliotheken für Erwachsene und Kinder. Der Wettbewerb ist Teil der Bewegung zur Wertschätzung von Architektur im kleinen Maßstab, die von Bee Breeders ins Leben gerufen wurde.
ARCHHIVE BOOKS ist eine neue gedruckte Publikationsreihe, die Architekten, Start-ups, Investoren, Unternehmer und sowohl kommerzielle als auch gemeinnützige Organisationen miteinander verbinden soll, die sich auf verschiedene Weise für die Lösung aktueller Probleme wie die globale Krise des erschwinglichen Wohnraums engagieren. Mit den kommenden Ausgaben möchte sie eine neue Art von Gemeinschaft zum Austausch von Ideen aufbauen.
Das Projekt des tragbaren Lesesaals ist eines der vielen Projekte von Bee Breeders, die Designideen aus der ganzen Welt zusammenbringen und umsetzen sollen. Als einfacher, aber wichtiger Raum soll der tragbare Lesesaal auch Architekturideen besser zugänglich machen. Die Gewinner dieses Designwettbewerbs wurden aufgrund ihrer Umsetzbarkeit und ihres innovativen Denkens ausgewählt.
Competition assignment
Bee Breeders has partnered with ARCHHIVE BOOKS to organize a competition for portable reading rooms that could be easily assembled and disassembled in cities around the world. The intent of the project is to construct a modular book-sharing structure, to promote reading and establish community spaces with free access to printed literature - accessible libraries for adults and children alike. The competition is part of Bee Breeders small-scale architecture appreciation movement.
ARCHHIVE BOOKS is a new print publication series intended to connect architects, startups, investors, entrepreneurs, and both for- and non-profit organizations engaged in various ways of solving topical issues, such as the global affordable housing crisis. With its forthcoming volumes, it hopes to build a new type of community for sharing ideas.
The portable reading room project is one of many projects by Bee Breeders meant to bring together and implement design ideas from around the world. A simple but important space, the portable reading room is also meant to make architecture ideas more accessible. Winners of this design competition were chosen based on their ability to be implemented, and also for their innovative thinking.

Despite the growing presence of digital devices, the demand for physical books remains as strong as ever, and with good reason. Research has shown that readers of printed books absorb and remember more information about the plot of a book than those using e-readers, likely due to the tactile sensation of handling a physical book, turning its pages and feeling how far you have progressed. Even children as young as three benefit from being read to from physical books, becoming more engaged and finding the story easier to remember. Researchers theorise that this is because they are less distracted than by electronic devices.
In order to help make books more accessible, and reading more encouraged, ARCHHIVE BOOKS are calling for submissions for the ARCHHIVE BOOKS‘ Portable Reading Rooms architecture competition. This competition is seeking designs for a small structure that could be embedded within existing public spaces in multiple locations around the world. The Reading Rooms would have to function as an intimate meditative space in which people can read and exchange books.
For the ARCHHIVE BOOKS‘ Portable Reading Rooms architecture competition, the structure would need to be highly versatile so that it could be located in various locations, and could function in any climate and any season. Though their functionality could change throughout the year - operating as a simple book exchange box during colder months and a more immersive and interactive reading experience during milder weather - the Reading Rooms should have the potential to enrich the community in which it is placed.
Participants have total creative freedom when conceptualising the design and functioning of the Reading Rooms, in fact, they need not even be a physical room. As long as they are a welcoming and nourishing environment that encourages reading, the Reading Rooms can be as open or closed off as you like.
ARCHHIVE BOOKS will invite selected city councils from around the world to construct the winning design entries. Participants may propose which countries and cities they feel would benefit most from their Reading Rooms designs, however it is still important that submitted designs remain versatile and portable enough to be located anywhere in the world.
