Spirit of Spark: Call for Artists
About the Competition
We are seeking expressions of interest from artists working in any medium to create a permanent public artwork in Edinburgh that celebrates the life, work, and spirit of Muriel Spark - one of Scotland’s most original and internationally acclaimed writers.
This high-profile commission invites bold and imaginative responses that reflect Spark’s sharp wit, literary brilliance and cultural legacy. Best known for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Spark was a fearless innovator whose influence extended far beyond a single novel. Despite her global stature and strong ties to the city, Edinburgh has no permanent tribute to her.
Eligibility
Artists working in any discipline with at least three years’ experience as a working artist (as evidenced by a professional CV) are welcome to apply.

Stage One:
Call out: from 19 November 2025
Deadline for expressions of interest: 11.59pm (GMT) 11 January 2026
Announcement of short-list: early March 2026
Stage Two:
Appointment of short-listed artists: April 2026
Concept design phase: April - May 2026
Announcement of selected artist: June 2026
