LIVING RUINS II Competition

TerraViva is happy to announce the launch of LIVING RUINS II! Participants are challenged to imagine a new concept of Open-Air Museum, focused on the spectacular ghost village of Dereiçi (Turkey). The program include also the design of a Visitor Centre, to be conceived as the main reference point for tourists and a support space for cultural activities...

Prizes up to 10.000 $ will be awarded to the winners selected by an international jury panel composed, among others, by Ayhan Gök (Mardin Provincial Directorate), Foteini Kanellopoulou (Arup), Xuanyu (Alfred) Wei (Diller Scofidio + Renfro) and Francesca Porro (Stefano Boeri Architetti).

BRIEF
Through the design of a proper Open-Air Museum, "Living Ruins II" aims to collect projects capable of guaranteeing the conservation and revalorisation of such a unique Turkish heritage.

As stated in its own title, this competition attempts to counteract the current status of "Ghost Town" attributed to Dereiçi. By inviting visitors to spend more time exploring and appreciating the area, Slow Tourism could foster a deeper connection to the site, promoting virtuous practices and supporting the local economy.

Participants will be asked to design a museography concept that will transform Dereiçi into a dynamic living exhibition. The project should seamlessly blend historical elements with contemporary interventions.

PRIZES

• 2nd Prize: 2.000$

GUIDELINES
It will be required to propose one or more itineraries that allow visitors to walk and discover the different areas of the site. The character of the architectural elements that will link these paths will be totally left to the decision of each designer, therefore promoting originality, creativity and ingenuity.

The idea is to intend this project as an open garden capable of showcasing the beauty of decay through the integration of paths, programs, structures, devices and new uses. It will be asked also the design of a new building that will serve to receive visitors and tourists who wish to explore the Open-Air Museum. This volume will function as a complement to the entire complex and will contain all the basic functions needed for the proper operation of the museum.

REQUESTED MATERIAL
Two A1 panels (59,4 x 84,1 cm - horizontal) and a brief text describing the proposal (250-500 words).
