RIBA Competitions is pleased to announce the launch of a competition seeking a multi-disciplinary team to design a new Customer Innovation Centre for Johnson Matthey (JM) which is planned for its site at Sonning Common, Reading.
JM is a global leader in science that makes the world cleaner and healthier, developing sustainable technologies that have major positive impact on the planet. Its emission control catalyst technologies prevent around 40 tonnes of harmful pollutants from entering the air every minute, and its active pharmaceutical ingredients, which are the vital component of life enhancing drugs, improve quality of life for millions each year.
Using expertise in chemistry and materials, JM works collaboratively with customers to develop innovative, tailored solutions to get the best possible outcomes for them. It also brings manufacturing skills to navigate the challenges of scaling up from lab into full scale commercial production.
At the same time, JM invests substantially into the research and development of sustainable products for the future. One example is the development of cathode materials for batteries that will power electric cars and enable the journey to pollution-free roads.
Now JM is looking to build a Customer Innovation Centre (CIC) that inspires and engages customers and future partners. The centre will showcase how JM applies c’ complex problems. The preferred site for this new centre is a’sSonning Common facility, near Reading, which is the base of its corporate science and technology centre. It is expected that the building will be an innovative and flexible space where individual visitors and small or large groups can be accommodated in an integrated experience. The site is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and as such will need careful design and presentation for planning.
At the first phase, Expressions of Interest are invited from innovative, multi-disciplinary design teams. It is intended that a shortlist of four design teams will be selected to prepare initial concept design proposals.
Jo Wright from Arup Architecture is the Architect Adviser for the competition and the budget for the project is estimated at GBP £6m including building fitting out costs.

The deadline for receipt of applications is 14.00hrs on Tuesday 4 September 2018
