RIBA launches international Competition for St Michael le Belfrey Church in York

St Michael le Belfrey Church and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) invite architect-led multi-disciplinary teams from around the world to enter a competition for the re-ordering of St Michael le Belfrey church building in York.
The Grade 1 listed church is situated in the heart of York’s historic centre and lies in a conservation area immediately adjacent to York Minster.
The church requires essential works and an opportunity has been identified for the building to be refurbished and altered to create a space better suited to 21st Century worship and mission.
The purpose of the re-ordered building is to provide a significant and attractive resource facility for engaging and welcoming people into the family of God requiring a space which provides an open, welcoming, accessible and warm church environment, with a flexible interior arrangement which remains faithful to its heritage. The re-ordering will seek to embrace the use of current technology to its fullest, while at the same time preserving the most significant historical and architectural aspects of the building.
In the first instance, Expressions of Interest are invited in accordance with the requirements set out in the preliminary briefing paper. The deadline for Expressions of Interest is 14:00 Tuesday 19 February 2019.

Reverend Matthew Porter, vicar at St Michael le Belfrey Church, said: ‘This project is all about making our historic church building better suited for worship and mission in the 21st Century; being better equipped so we, and future generations, can even more effectively worship God and reach out with the love of Christ, to York and beyond.’

Keith Williams, Keith Williams Architects, acting as RIBA Advisor, said: ‘This stunningly beautiful church in its spectacular location next to one of Europe’s greatest cathedrals, is an absolute gem. Dating from the early 16th century, St Michael le Belfrey exhibits many layers of

architectural intervention as patterns of worship and social structures have evolved over time. The great challenge set out in this competition is to create the new legacy, the 21st century architectural intervention which will facilitate evolving patterns of worship for now and for generations to come.’

A shortlist of up to five teams will be selected by an appointed panel to participate in the design phase of the Competition. The evaluation panel will be comprised of Members of the Parochial Church Council (PCC) at St Michael le Belfrey and Keith Williams acting as the RIBA Advisor. Each of the five shortlisted teams will receive an honorarium payment of £7,000 (+VAT).
